Feature #1: 64-bit Support?
64-bit editions of Windows 7 are designed to take full advantage of the increased RAM and multi-tasking capabilities of 64-bit PCs. 64-bit PCs can handle larger amounts of information than a 32-bit system. Since it can use
more RAM—4 GB and up—a 64-bit computer can be more responsive when you're running lots of programs at once.
Feature #2: Accessibility?
Interacting with your PC is simpler with improved speech recognition, a screen narrator, a flexible screen magnifier, and an on-screen keyboard.
Speech
Windows Speech Recognition now works better—and with more programs. So instead of using the keyboard, you can just tell your computer what to do. Start an e-mail by speaking the recipient's name,
surf the web without a keyboard, or dictate your documents.
Magnifier
Magnifier enlarges hard-to-see text and pictures. Full-screen mode magnifies the entire desktop, and lens mode zooms in on particular areas. Inside the Magnifier window, you can click buttons and
input text as you normally would.
On Screen Keyboard
On-Screen Keyboard lets you have a "keyboard without a keyboard" using the mouse or hot keys. With Windows Touch and the right hardware you can also input text by tapping directly on the screen.
Word prediction speeds things up: type the first few letters of a word, and Windows will finish it for you—and predict the next word too.
Narrator and Visual Notifications
Windows 7 can read on-screen text aloud and describe some events (like error messages), helping you use your computer without the display. With Audio Description, you can hear a narration of what's
happening in a video. Windows can also replace sound alerts with visual cues like a screen flash, so system alerts are noticeable even when they're not heard.
Feature #3: Action Center?
Now you can respond to system notifications and keep your PC running smoothly from a single location.
Peeved by pop-ups? With Windows XP, you get alerts right when the system needs your attention. Windows Vista brings more order to the alerts, and in some cases, more alerts than people want.
So people asked us for more control over the number and timing of alerts. With Windows 7, alerts are much more under your command.
Action Center gives you one place to go to address system notifications and tasks, and to keep your PC running smoothly. If Windows wants your attention, the Action Center icon appears in the taskbar.
Click it and you'll see alerts and suggested fixes for any problems.
Feature #4: Aero?
Aero is a set of visual effects that make your desktop more beautiful while making it easier to look through the windows you have open to find what you want.
Introduced in Windows Vista, Aero is a set of visual enhancements that make your desktop more beautiful and functional. Aero has been refined since Windows Vista and we’re introducing new features
like Peek and Shake with Windows 7.
Aero visual hallmarks include subtle animations and translucent glass windows, which you can personalize. Pick from the included color palette, or create your own custom tints with the color mixer.
But there's more to Aero than just a pretty user interface. Point to a program's icon on the taskbar, and you’ll see a thumbnail-sized preview of all its open windows—even if it's a running video.
Hover on a thumbnail, and it morphs into a full-screen preview. Shake and Peekmeanwhile, cut through desktop clutter by quickly minimizing open windows or turning them invisible. The Aero desktop
experience is available in the Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate editions of Windows 7.
Feature #5: Backup and Restore?
Now you can easily configure and schedule regular backups of your important files like photos and financial records—just in case.
Backup and Restore, improved for Windows 7, creates safety copies of your most important files, so if you lose something, it won't be lost forever.
Let Windows choose what to back up, or pick individual folders, libraries, or drives. Windows can back up files on whatever schedule you choose. Just set it and forget it. In Windows 7, you can
back up files to another drive, your network, or a DVD. Backup and Restore for your personal PC and attached DVD or external hard drives comes with all editions of Windows.
If you want to backup to a network location, say on your company's central server, network attached storage, or another computer on your network, you'll need Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate.
Feature #6: BitLocker?
How can you help protect your data from loss, theft, or hackers? The answer: BitLocker. If you've got information on your PC that you need to protect, you can help prevent theft or loss by
using BitLocker data encryption to put a virtual lock on your files. Improved for Windows 7 and available in the Ultimate edition, BitLocker helps keep everything from documents to passwords safer
by encrypting the entire drive that Windows and your data reside on. Once BitLocker is turned on, any file you save on that drive is encrypted automatically.
BitLocker To Go, a new feature of Windows 7, gives the lockdown treatment to easily-misplaced portable storage devices like USB flash drives and external hard drives.
Feature #7: Calculator?
We gave Calculator a fresh look and new features, including new Programmer and Statistics modes. Unit conversion translates Celsius to Fahrenheit, ounces to grams, and joules to BTUs.
Handy calculation templates can help you compute stuff like fuel economy and auto lease payments. Calculation history displays what you've done, and if you've got a touchscreen PC,
you'll be able to tap out calculations right on the screen.
Feature #8: Desktop Enhancements?
Opening, closing, and sorting through windows is a lot easier. You can find what you want and get things done a lot faster. With Windows 7, we’ve added a number of improvements and new features,
to make it easier to get more done on the desktop.
New Ways to Juggle Windows
Overwhelmed by open windows? Windows 7 comes with three simple yet powerful new features to help you instantly clear through desktop clutter.
Shake: Want to focus on one window? Shake it, and all the other open windows on your desktop will be hidden.
Shake again, and they're all back.
Peek: Look right through open windows to see the icons, gadgets, and anything else on your desktop, all with a simple move of your cursor.
Snap: Size and arrange
windows by simply dragging their borders to the edges of your screen. Instantly expand to full screen and back, or arrange two windows side by side.
Spectacular new wallpapers
We spend a lot of time staring at our PCs. Aesthetics shouldn't just be an afterthought. That's why Windows 7 includes a slew of new desktop backgrounds—wallpapers—that range from sublime to silly.
Or try the new desktop slide show, which displays a rotating series of pictures (ours or yours). Your desktop will never be dull again.
Retooled taskbar
Since Windows 95, the taskbar has served as the go-to spot to see what programs you have open and to switch windows. Times and PC habits have changed. So in Windows 7, the taskbar has been
completely redesigned to help you get more done with fewer clicks. For starters, you can arrange programs where you want them on the taskbar, pin the ones you use a lot so they’re always there,
and launch them directly from the taskbar. When you open programs and windows, it’s a lot easier to see what’s open.
Improved gadgets
Keep an eye on the weather, news, and traffic. Run an endless slideshow of your favorite photos. All with these simple desktop programs. The popular mini-programs introduced in Windows Vista,
are now more flexible and fun. And, now you can stick your gadgets anywhere on the desktop.
Feature #9: Device Management?
See everything you need to know about your printers, cameras, and other devices in one place. And, your devices are much simpler to hook up and use. In Windows 7, working with cameras, cell phones,
and other devices is easier than with prior versions of Windows, thanks to two new features:
Device Stage
Device Stage provides a single place to check on and manage cell phones, printers, digital cameras, and other compatible devices. Manufacturers can customize Device Stage to show relevant status
(like the number of shots on your camera) and menu options (like picking a ringtone). Device Stage is usually tailored to your device—down to a photo of your exact model,
so you can find what you’re looking for at a glance.
Devices and Printers
The Devices and Printers folder is a single location where you can access and interact with all your devices. When Windows 7 detects a device it automatically downloads and installs any
required drivers. (Talk about easy set up!) After your device is installed, it will appear in the Devices and Printers folder.
Feature #10: Direct X 11?
This is the latest graphics technology for Windows. In addition to richer images in general, you'll see the best gaming graphics possible. The DirectX technology has grown alongside improvements
in graphics processing hardware, so you can get the best possible PC gaming experience on Windows. Windows 7 helps you stay right on top of your game, with the best possible visual effects.
With DirectX 11, your warp-speed races and mind-bending, inter-galactic feuds can look incredible. Of course great graphics aren’t all about games. With high-end graphics hardware,
you’ll also get an unprecedented visual experience for your non-gaming applications.
