Q1: What are the key new feature areas in Publisher 2003?

Publisher 2003 includes many new and improved features designed to help business users create, design and publish professional marketing and communication materials, in-house including:

1) Enhanced support for Web: new Web Site wizards, incremental upload of changes to a Web file, support for nearly 20 Web Page types, enhanced navigation bar support and more.

2) 10 new Master Design Sets (for total of 45) for creating consistent look across business publications, new Email Wizards and Web Site Wizards; improved Design Checker, support for multiple master pages, Baseline Alignment, Widow/Orphan control.

3) Enhanced Commercial Printing support: includes support for CMYK Composite Postscript printing, improved Graphics Manager.

4) Catalog Merge: Create publications by merging text and photos from a data source.

5) Enhanced support for E-mail: new E-mail Wizard for creating various types of email messages; support for viewing Publisher Email in various email clients and web-based clients including Outlook, Outlook Express, Hotmail (new), and AOL mail (new).

Q2: Why would a small business user who has a word processor need Microsoft Publisher?

In part it comes down to using the 'right tool for the task'. Word processors are great for creating simple documents and longer documents that need table of contents and indexes. A word processor, however, is not designed to easily create more the more complex publications that you need to create professional business marketing and communication materials.

Publisher is specifically designed to automate page layout tasks by providing publication-specific wizards (newsletters, brochures, postcards, catalogs), templates and design guidance. In addition, Publisher supports creating publications for commercial printing.

Q3: Do I have to uninstall previous versions of Publisher to run the Publisher 2003?

No. You can run them simultaneously. During the installation process for Publisher 2003, you will be asked if you wish to keep the previous version. Simply choose that option.

Q4: Can files created in Publisher 2003 be opened and edited in previous versions of Publisher?

Publisher 2003 files can be opened and edited in Publisher 2002 only, as they share the same file format. In order to open and edit Publisher 2003 files in Publisher 2000, you must choose File/Save As, and then choose Publisher 2000.

Q5: Can I use the Publisher 2003 to work on files created in previous versions of Publisher?

Yes. You can use Publisher 2003 to open, edit, and publish files created in prior versions of Publisher.
